Asylum: 50 families a week told they can stay in Scotland
To avoid a repeat of the problems, the government last year introduced a streamlined system for dealing with the 2,000 asylum seekers who arrive in the UK each month. It set tough new deadlines for dealing with applications, and officials are now expected to reach a decision within one month of an application being lodged. However, that has triggered fears that many more cases will be mishandled, with applicants not being given enough time to gather the documents, witnesses and other evidence they may need to argue their claim.One asylum seeker, who asked not to be named, described the moment when she was finally given permission to build a new life in Scotland. She was relaxing at home when, at 3.50pm, on 8 October last year, her prayers were answered.The phone call that confirmed she had been granted indefinite leave to remain in Scotland – ending seven years of anguish after fleeing her North African homeland – could not have been more timely.

The Go-Go's still got the beat
When the Go-Go's released "Beauty and the Beat" in 1981, they couldn't have predicted how successful, and influential, the album would become. On the strength of the hits "Our Lips Are Sealed" and "We Got the Beat," the Go-Go's became the first all-female band to top the Billboard charts, inspiring young women around the world to rock out themselves. The group went on to score the hit "Vacation," its video becoming an MTV sensation back when music videos still mattered. Nearly 30 years later, the Go-Go's have still got the beat. Lead singer Belinda Carlisle — on her cell phone en route from Austin to Dallas — talks to us about posing for Playboy and how the band has stayed together all this time (with a few breakups in between). University of Cumbria: Can it raise ambitions and boost the economy of ...
When the author, Margaret Forster, decided on a university, she chose Oxford where she headed with an open scholarship. Her husband, the writer Hunter Davies, who was also from Carlisle, picked Durham University. Another local luminary, the writer and broadcaster Melvyn Bragg, also selected Oxford. None of them could have stayed at home, if they had wanted to, because until recently Cumbria had no university of its own. There was no higher education in the north westernmost corner of England beyond Lancaster, not even a college of higher education, though there was a teacher training college in Ambleside and an art college in Carlisle. This lack in what is a very large and beautiful county stretching from Lancashire in the south to Scotland in the north, and from the Irish Sea in the west to the Pennines in the east had a profound effect on the region.
